Narrative technique

In medias res

Beginning a story in the middle of the action, before the background is explained, and filling in context later.

In medias res in fiction: 2 works

  1. The poem begins with Odysseus already stranded on Calypso's island, with his earlier adventures revealed through flashbacks.

  2. The 'fast pace' and the protagonist immediately 'finds himself embroiled' in a conspiracy suggest the story begins directly in the action.
