The Veldt
Ray Bradbury · 1950 · Short Story
This work introduced an early, cautionary tale about fully immersive, responsive virtual environments and their potential to alienate users from reality and foster dangerous desires.
What it is
In a technologically advanced home, a nursery can create any environment the children imagine, including a realistic African veldt with lions. The parents become disturbed by the children's obsession and the increasingly violent nature of the simulations, fearing the technology is replacing their family bonds and reality itself.

Bradbury's exploration of immersive, responsive simulated environments and their psychological impact on users prefigures the themes of altered reality and perception found in Ubik.
The concept of a digital environment that becomes dangerously real and traps its inhabitants, even if not fully digital, shares thematic echoes with Tron's digital world.
